Maya sets out on a bright Saturday morning wearing her red rain boots and mustard-yellow overalls, carrying a green canvas satchel with a duck patch. Together with her friend Rosie, she visits the duck sanctuary, where the kind keeper Mr. Harris introduces them to Pip, a tiny fluffy duckling with a soft blue ribbon tag. Maya is eager to help and has brought bread crumbs from home, but Mr. Harris gently explains that bread is not good for ducks and can make them sick. Though she feels embarrassed, Maya is keen to learn the right way to care for animals.
Mr. Harris shows the girls the proper duck food and explains that ducks need clean water for drinking and swimming. Maya writes everything down in her notebook and draws a little picture of Pip. Together they clean the pond, scoop out leaves and add fresh water, then feed Pip the correct food. Maya feels proud that she can truly help, and she wants to share what she has learned.
