Maya lives in a small house with a big backyard that is plain and quiet, nothing but dry grass and a few old stones. More than anything, she wants a garden full of life. Her mother gives her a bag of native plant seeds, explaining that these plants belong in the local soil and help the wildlife around them. Wearing her red boots, green overalls and yellow sun hat, Maya digs little holes, tucks each seed in and waters them gently, checking every day for the first green sprouts.

Weeks later the yard has changed completely. Purple coneflowers nod in the breeze, orange butterfly weed opens like tiny suns, and thick green bushes rise where only stones lay before. Then one morning a little bird no bigger than Maya's palm arrives, bright blue above, orange on its chest and white below. It pecks at seeds and hops from stem to stem, and soon it brings friends: a red-crested cardinal, a yellow goldfinch and a green hummingbird with a long tail. Maya learns from a library book what each bird is called, adds a birdbath and a small wooden house, and when a gray cat creeps too near she waves her sun hat and shoos it away. The story by Aysel Banu YAVUZAL follows a child who turns a bare patch of ground into a home for living things, and it shows how native plants feed birds, shelter them and draw butterflies and bees as well. Young readers learn along with Maya that observation, patience and small acts of care can make a real difference, and that the trust of a wild creature is something earned quietly, one day at a time.
