The Elephant's Mouse Family

In a quiet forest clearing, Ellie the elephant moves along the paths wearing her bright yellow scarf, greeting each creature she passes. Close by, under the roots of a large oak tree, Papa Mouse, Mama Mouse and little Pip live contentedly in their snug burrow.

When a heavy rainstorm arrives, water starts to seep toward the burrow entrance, and the mouse family fears their home will flood. Papa Mouse paces, Mama Mouse soothes Pip with a soft song, and no one can think of anyone big enough to help a family of mice. Then Ellie comes splashing along the path, drawn by their worried squeaks. This gentle picture-book story by Jane MEADOW shows young readers kindness turned into action, as Ellie notices someone small in trouble and uses her strength to help. It is a warm read for story time, and the tale can be read on Kids Tale Book.
