On a bright Saturday morning, Noah follows the gravel path to the animal shelter, where Mrs. Hale has a special task waiting. The newest resident is Barnaby, a gentle grey donkey around twenty-five years old and the oldest animal there. His drooping ears, tired brown eyes and worn halter show Noah that Barnaby has lived a long life, and Mrs. Hale explains that older animals need extra care and a comfortable place to rest.
Noah decides on the spot to give Barnaby exactly that. With Mrs. Hale's help he gathers fluffy hay, a soft blanket and wooden boards, then builds a thick, cozy bed in the donkey's pen while Barnaby watches, sniffs the fresh bedding and nuzzles his shoulder. A carrot, a scratch behind the ear and a quiet afternoon together turn the two into firm friends, and when a young goat named Pip gets stuck and bleats for help, Noah rushes to free him. This warm tale by Jane MEADOW about kindness toward elderly animals can be read on Kids Tale Book.
