On a bright sunny morning, Sam puts on his yellow rain boots and straw sun hat and sets off into the garden he loves to explore. Near the quiet pond at the bottom of the hill, he meets a plump spring-green frog with golden eyes and dark spots on its back. The frog hops along the water's edge as if asking Sam to follow, and it leads him to a muddy, bare patch where the water looks cloudy. Sam begins to understand that the frog's home is not as clean or safe as it should be.
When Sam's mother explains that frogs need clean water and safe plants, and that the pesticide in the shed can make them sick, Sam decides to act. Together they put the spray away for good, dig a new shallow pond lined with smooth stones, and plant ferns, moss and tall reeds so the frogs have places to hide. This gentle tale by Jane MEADOW shows young readers how small, practical choices can make a garden friendlier for wildlife, and it can be read on Kids Tale Book.
