Daniel spends his summer days on the beach, wearing his red sneakers and green bucket hat. When he finds a sign for a sea turtle nesting area, he meets Marina, a volunteer who explains how sea turtles lay eggs and how hatchlings use moonlight on the waves to find the ocean. Daniel promises to help protect the turtles and spends the season checking nests, counting eggs, and making posters, while his grandmother Lucia brings lemonade to the volunteers.

One warm night, Daniel watches a nest hatch and sees the tiny turtles head toward the bright lights of beach houses instead of the sea. Marina teaches him that hatchlings follow the brightest light, and that unnecessary beachfront lighting can lead them astray. After finding a small turtle stuck in the sand, Daniel names it Pip and decides to take action. He launches a light-reduction campaign with flyers, a neighborhood meeting, and door-to-door visits, asking residents to close curtains and dim their bulbs. This gentle story, written by Jane MEADOW, follows Daniel as he persuades a doubtful community that dark beaches matter. The tale can be read on Kids Tale Book.
