In a quiet countryside, a sparkling pond is home to many birds, including Serena, a graceful white swan, and Henry, a tall grey heron. The two are best friends and share a favorite feeding spot where the water is shallow and full of tender plants and tiny fish. Their days are sweet and simple until a big storm leaves a jumble of tangled branches blocking the spot. Serena and Henry discover they cannot clear it alone.

They begin by pushing and pulling with all their strength, but the branches hold tight. Realizing the task is too heavy for two, they decide to ask for help. Pip the duck arrives with his five ducklings, Greta the goose brings her strong flock, and even the little sparrows tug at the twigs. With Serena and Henry guiding everyone and counting to three, the birds learn that pushing and pulling at the same moment makes all the difference. This gentle tale by Jane MEADOW shows how friends with different strengths can solve a problem none could manage alone. It is suited to children beginning to read longer stories and to parents and teachers looking for a warm example of cooperation, patience, and asking for help. The tale can be read on Kids Tale Book.
