Oscar the otter enjoys a comfortable life in a den by a sparkling river, splashing with Mama Otter and cheering with Papa Otter from the bank. When his parents gently explain that a rescued pup with no family will come to live with them, Oscar's amber eyes go wide and worries begin: he likes things just the way they are and wonders whether there will still be time for him. The new arrival, Pip, is small and shy, with soft grey-brown fur, a pale silver belly and a little blue knitted scarf, and he trips over his own paws and slips into the water at every turn.
At first Oscar is unsure, and a tight feeling grows in his chest as he watches his parents comfort Pip and fears he will be forgotten. Papa asks him to be his big helper and teach Pip how to float, and that small moment of pride starts to change things. As the two otters chase minnows, poke their noses into hollow logs and laugh at Pip's silly jokes, Oscar discovers that sharing his days is a happier adventure than being alone. This gentle story by Jane MEADOW follows a young otter learning that a family's love is big enough for everyone, and that patience and teamwork can turn a strange newcomer into a true brother. It is suited to young children and to parents or teachers reading aloud with them, offering a warm way to talk about jealousy, belonging and the courage it takes to welcome someone new. The tale can be read on Kids Tale Book.
