In the wide, sandy desert, Cora the camel is strong and dependable, carrying water and supplies for caravans. Her sandy-tan fur blends with the dunes, and her teal saddle blanket with orange tassels flaps gently as she walks. Everyone trusts her to lead the way. Not far away, Fifi the tiny fennec fox pops out of a burrow. Her pale cream fur is soft, and her huge ears stand up like radar dishes. With a sky-blue scarf and a silver compass charm, Fifi is curious and quick, always eager to explore. When Cora and Fifi meet at a small oasis, they decide to travel together: Cora carries the heavy loads, and Fifi spots the tiny landmarks.
The next day, a caravan gathers to cross the desert. Cora kneels so travelers can load her saddlebags, and Fifi runs ahead, sniffing the air and calling, 'Follow me!' The journey begins well, but by midday the sun is fierce, and the dunes look unfamiliar. The wind has shifted the sand, and the caravan is lost. Cora keeps her voice calm, and Fifi climbs onto Cora's hump to get a better view. From her high perch, Fifi's sharp eyes spot a line of flat rocks that might be a trail. She leads the way, and Cora follows with the heavy bags, keeping everyone together. As they climb a hill, Fifi's big ears catch the sound of trickling water. They find an oasis, and everyone drinks and rests. The child who was scared hugs Fifi, and the travelers thank them. Cora and Fifi realize that their different strengths make them a great team. This heartwarming story teaches children the value of teamwork, trust, and appreciating each other's unique abilities. Jane MEADOW's tale can be read on Kids Tale Book.
