Seven-year-old Sam, with his messy sandy-brown hair and freckles, carries a small green treat pouch as he and his mom drive to the rescue shelter one sunny morning. There he meets Pip, a four-month-old puppy with cream and tan scruffy fur, one floppy ear and one upright ear, and a red collar with a round silver tag. Pip is shy and frightened, found alone and still learning to trust people. A helper advises Sam to go slow, so Sam sits quietly on the floor with a treat on his open palm, waiting without moving until Pip dares to take one small step forward and then another.

From that first gentle moment, Sam returns to the shelter every day, teaching Pip to sit, stay, and come when called, never rushing and always using calm words and tiny treats. A soft red ball brings out Pip's playful side, and Sam's mom notices that Pip is a different dog when Sam is there. When the day comes to fill out the papers and take Pip home, the puppy is nervous at first and hides behind the sofa, but Sam waits patiently again. The story follows a boy and a scared puppy learning to trust each other, showing young readers how patience, calm words, and small rewards can help a frightened animal feel brave.
