Ethan lives in a little white house beside a green meadow and dreams of galloping across the fields with the wind in his curly dark hair. When his neighbor Mrs. Hart introduces him to Willow, a retired chestnut-brown mare with a soft grey-white muzzle, he climbs on expecting a fast, exciting ride. Instead, Willow takes a few slow steps and stops with a heavy sigh, and Mrs. Hart explains that long rides hurt the old horse's tired legs.
That night, thinking by his window, Ethan realizes that riding may not be the only way to enjoy a horse's company. He returns to the barn with his green canvas satchel and learns to groom Willow's coat until it shines, clean her leather halter, pick out her hooves, and take her on slow walks beside the meadow. Written by Jane MEADOW, this warm tale about patience and everyday care can be read on Kids Tale Book.
