Ben, a curious boy with a round, friendly face and a bright smile, sets out one sunny morning with his small brown backpack and discovers a doorway of twisting vines and sparkling light behind the garden hedge. Stepping through, he lands on warm golden sand and meets Pip, a small fennec fox with huge ears and a tiny orange straw scarf, who explains that Ben has come through the friendship portal. Luma, a gentle owl with a sky-blue scarf and tiny silver bells, and Tambo, a young grey elephant with a leafy sprout behind his ear, soon join them, and the four become friends where their kingdoms meet.
A shared problem arises: the river between their lands has stopped singing, and Tambo's jungle pool is shrinking. Ben takes out his notebook and asks each friend what they have noticed, and the team rides on Tambo's broad back to follow the river to its source. There they find the cause and meet a shy family of beavers who made an honest mistake, and the group works out a plan that helps everyone rather than blaming anyone.
