Every spring, when the yard mud softens and the air carries the smell of rain, the barn swallows come back, and a boy named Sam waits for them on the porch steps. Small and wiry, with messy black hair and a chipped front tooth, Sam brings his little green canvas satchel everywhere, holding two notebooks and one sharp pencil: one for the weather, one for the swallows. Year after year he writes down the same careful details, the arrival day, the flight paths, and the nesting spots under the eaves.

One morning Sam's grandfather, tall and stooped in his faded olive cardigan, sees the boy watching the birds and says he once did the same. From a wooden drawer he takes out old notebooks, worn at the corners, with yellowed pages and small, careful handwriting. Together they compare the two records, and Sam notices what the birds have been showing him all along. This gentle tale by Çınar BİBER can be read on Masalcı Baba.
