Winnie the wombat lives in a cozy burrow beneath a big gum tree, where twisting tunnels form a maze she patrols every morning in her red knitted scarf. Proud of her home but curious about the places she has not yet found, she keeps digging, and one day her strong claws strike something that is not a rock: a flat wooden door with a rusty handle, stuck tight underground.
Unable to open it alone, Winnie fetches her friend Benny the bandicoot, who arrives with his green canvas satchel and a nose for clues. Together they scrape away dirt and roots, sniff out a gap where fresh air slips through, and push the door open. Beyond it lies a long, low tunnel that leads to a room of root-and-stone shelves filled with old books, a note left by the burrowing animals who built the place, and a tiny, ancient bookworm named Wally who has guarded the library alone for years.
