In the wide, sunny meadow between Oakfield and Riverbend, children from both villages play together. Little Theo, who wears a mustard yellow tunic and a red neckerchief, is known for his big ears for listening rather than his size. He and his best friend Lily from Riverbend build stick bridges over the stream and give every beetle they find a name, because for them the meadow belongs to everybody.

When the Riverbend gardener Mara wants the open grass for vegetable beds and the Oakfield carpenter Bram wants a playground with swings and a slide, the villages stop waving and start shouting. The children watch the grown-ups grow cross, and the meadow turns prickly. Theo cannot sleep for thinking about carrots and swings, until a small, bright idea comes to him. This gentle tale by Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN, suited to early primary school children and to reading aloud, can be read on Online Masal.
