In a village set among misty hills, nine-year-old Mei assists her father, a lantern maker, in his workshop that smells of bamboo and glue. Each evening they create lanterns for travelers, and Mei enjoys mixing paste and cutting paper. Her father often remarks that while a good lantern lights the way, a kind heart lights the journey. Mei wears a teal tunic and a red thread bracelet given by her mother.

One quiet evening, while sorting paper, Mei finds a hidden roll of golden paper that shimmers like captured sunlight. Her father explains he has been saving it, saying it holds a special light but he has never tried it. With his permission, Mei carefully cuts the golden paper into thin strips and glues them onto a bamboo frame. When finished, the lantern glows with a warm, golden light. Outside, it reveals a faint, glowing path where no path had been before. Her father gasps, realizing the golden paper reveals what is hidden.
