Maya is a young girl with curly black hair in two puffy buns and a satchel full of animal drawings. She decides to plan a wildlife festival so her community can learn about the animals living nearby. She asks her Grandpa Leo, who loves nature as much as she does, and her little neighbor Tommy, who wears green frog rain boots and is eager to make masks, to help her. Together they tidy the town park and put up posters, and a plump robin with an orange breast and a tiny white feather on its head lands on one poster and becomes the festival mascot, Pip. Maya and Tommy make a small red ribbon for Pip's leg and learn to watch wildlife gently, without disturbing it.
As news travels, families bring old photos of owls, foxes and deer, and Grandpa Leo prepares a story circle with cushions and his walking stick. On festival day the park is full of families. Maya wears leaf-shaped hair clips and her brightest gap-toothed smile, Tommy wears his cardboard fox mask, and everyone plays Habitat Hop and makes masks from paper plates.
