Maya arrives at the animal sanctuary with her sketchbook and clipboard for a day of learning. Mr. Oakley, the tall caretaker with a white moustache, gives her a special task: meet each rescued animal, learn its story, and create illustrated stories for future visitors. Through her drawings, Maya discovers that caring for animals means understanding their individual needs.

Her first subject is Rosie, a chestnut-brown pig with a round belly and a soft blue harness, rescued from a farm that could no longer care for her. Maya learns about pigs' needs for good food, clean water, and a safe sleeping place, and sketches Rosie with a water bucket and a straw bed. Next, she meets Pip, a shy grey and white rabbit with one bent ear, found scared and alone in a park. Mr. Oakley teaches Maya to move slowly, speak softly, and give frightened animals space.
