Oliver, a small boy with messy chestnut hair, lives in a cozy house at the edge of town beside an old oak tree. Each morning he sits on the porch in his blue knit sweater and watches the world wake up. On a crisp autumn day a glossy black raven settles on the oak, and Oliver spots a ragged wingtip feather and a thin red thread around one leg. He names the bird Shadow and observes it quietly, learning its habits without scaring it off.

Hoping to earn the raven's trust, Oliver leaves small treats on the porch rail and reads in silence day after day. His grandpa Walter, watching from the window, reminds him that patience matters and that ravens remember kindness. Shadow grows bolder and starts leaving shiny treasures of its own, and one morning Oliver follows the bird to an abandoned workshop full of dusty tools and bright fragments, yet chooses not to go inside. This gentle tale by Jane MEADOW can be read on Kids Tale Book.
