Eight-year-old Malik adores honeybees even before he encounters one. On a bright Saturday morning, he brings a small cardboard hive he painted himself to a buzzing garden, where he meets Mr. Chen, a friendly beekeeper. Mr. Chen opens a real wooden hive, and Malik learns about the colony piece by piece: the queen who lays eggs, the worker bees who gather nectar and pollen, clean the hive, and feed the babies, and the drones who keep the hive warm and help protect the queen. He observes bees dancing to communicate flower locations, fanning their wings to cool the hive, and cooperating to lift a heavy drop of nectar.
With his notebook in hand, Malik realizes that every bee has a job and that small tasks are as important as big ones. The story follows him back to school, where he brings his painted hive and clay bees to class and explains to Mrs. Lee and his classmates what he has learned. When his teacher asks how a colony is like their classroom, Malik already knows the answer: everyone has a job, and when people cooperate, their shared home is happy and safe.
