Sam is a curious boy who enjoys exploring his garden, equipped with a paper map and a short pencil. On a misty evening, he notices a hedgehog struggling to pass through the garden fence because the boards are set too closely together. Sam decides to help by charting a safe route for the animal, noting every blocked path and drawing arrows to show where it gets stuck.
He then speaks with his neighbor, Mrs. Patel, who consents to cutting a small archway in her fence and planting lavender to guide the hedgehogs. Encouraged, Sam and his friend Maya visit other neighbors to persuade them to make similar openings. Even hesitant Mr. Green agrees once Sam explains that hedgehogs are gentle and eat garden pests.
