Sam lives in a small house with a big garden and spends every morning on the back steps with a worn blue notebook and a pencil, watching the garden wake up. Worms wiggle in the soil, butterflies drift over the flowers, and birds flit from branch to branch. Sam remembers his teacher Mrs. Patel's words that nature is everywhere if you only look.
One morning a plump robin with a bright orange-red breast hops onto the path and poses as if it wants its picture drawn. Sam sketches the bird and writes down what he notices. The next day a tiny blue tit arrives, hanging upside down from a twig like a little acrobat, and Sam adds it to his journal too. Day by day the pages grow fatter and more colorful as he records the birds' habits, their favorite seeds and bathing spots, and their songs in squiggles and dots. His little sister sits beside him to watch, and when Mrs. Patel discovers the notebook at school, she places it in the reading corner with a sign reading "Sam's Garden Birds."
