On a wide, sunny savanna, Zara the zebra and Gina the giraffe are best friends who enjoy helping the smaller animals around them. When a very hot day leaves the rabbits, tortoises and baby antelopes without any shade, the two friends set out to build a shelter beside the old acacia tree. Zara gathers soft grass near the ground with her strong teeth, while Gina stretches her long neck to pull down leafy branches for a thick roof. The little animals help too, carrying small twigs and leaves as the shelter slowly takes shape.

As the sun moves across the sky, the friends find that the work is not quite finished and must adjust the roof and walls to keep the shade inside. Zara's cheerful energy and Gina's patient thinking show how different strengths can fit together. This gentle tale by Jane MEADOW follows their teamwork step by step, from the first bundle of grass to the moment the tired little animals rest in the cool shelter. Written for young children and for anyone reading aloud, it can be read on Kids Tale Book.
