Little Mole makes his home in a snug burrow under a large oak tree, and his broad shovel-like paws are well suited to carving fresh tunnels through soft soil. He wears brass-rimmed goggles and a small leather tool belt holding tiny tools, ready whenever a task appears. Yet the dark, twisting passages all look alike, and again and again he turns left, then right, then left, only to find he has lost his way.
Rather than surrender to the problem, Little Mole sets out to solve it himself. In his workshop he collects a small magnet, a thin needle, a round brass case and a little lever, and carefully assembles a compass that always points toward home. A glossy blue-black beetle with a red neckerchief offers to race ahead through the tunnels and call out directions while he tests it.
