Maya is a young explorer who loves the rainforest and spends her mornings in a yellow shirt with green leaves, carrying a magnifying glass and notebooks to record the animals she encounters. Her goal for the day is to find the shy tree kangaroo that lives high in the treetops, and her friend Leo, in his blue kangaroo shirt, follows along. On the trail they meet Uncle Ben, the forest ranger, who shares facts about how the tree kangaroo balances on long branches, grips with strong claws and carries its baby in a pouch.
Looking up into the leafy canopy, Maya and Leo finally see a reddish-brown mother tree kangaroo with a golden belly. Maya spots a thin vine bracelet on one wrist and wonders about it, and when Uncle Ben explains that the animal's home is shrinking as trees are cut down, she decides to act. With Leo's help and materials from Uncle Ben, she builds a colorful model of the treetop habitat to share with classmates.
