Maya visits a tortoise sanctuary for the first time on a bright Saturday, meeting Ranger Priya at the gate. Inside a sunny enclosure she encounters Grandpa Shell, a huge tortoise more than a hundred years old with moss on his domed shell and gentle amber eyes. When Maya touches his warm shell, she starts to grasp what Ranger Priya explains: because a tortoise lives so long, caring for one is a very big promise.

Maya helps feed Grandpa Shell fresh leaves and cucumber slices, discovering that tortoises do everything slowly and that patience belongs to their care. Inspired by an empty board in the visitor center, she spends the afternoon making a bright display with drawings, large-lettered words such as water, food, shelter and patience, a spinning wheel of lifespans and a flip book of facts. This gentle tale by Çınar BİBER follows a curious child learning responsibility and respect for animals that outlive her, and it can be read on Masalcı Baba.
