Mira, a curious girl with wavy black braids and a mustard-yellow dress, lives in a cottage at the edge of a whispering wood. On a misty morning she follows a trail of tiny silver feathers and finds a great white swan asleep beside a hidden pond. The swan has a faint silver sheen, a golden crescent on its forehead, and a silver ribbon with a tiny bell around its neck. A folded leaf nearby says that only the missing lullaby can wake it, and Mira decides she must help.

Her search takes her to Granny Fern, who recalls only the first verse of the old lullaby and urges patience. A blue feather leads Mira to a family of wrens singing a sleepy tune, and later a dragonfly hums another verse. Each new piece brings her closer, yet the swan still sleeps, and Mira comes to understand that the lullaby must be complete and true.
