Maya arrives at the golden beach with her green backpack and her Aunt Rosa, expecting sandcastles and shells. Near the dunes, she notices something that looks like a rock but moves slowly: a sea turtle with a patterned green and brown shell, a small barnacle patch and a tiny scar near one flipper. Maya stays very still so she will not frighten the creature, and she names her Shelly. A ranger named Mr Daniel, wearing a khaki shirt with a turtle badge, explains that sea turtles come to this beach to lay their eggs and need clean sand and quiet places, yet visitors sometimes leave litter or come too close.
Wanting to do something real, Maya asks whether she can make something to teach people. With Aunt Rosa's paints, paper and markers, she spends an afternoon creating colourful posters and flyers. She paints Shelly's shell and writes simple tips in big letters about keeping the beach clean and staying a safe distance from turtles. The next morning Mr Daniel helps her place the signs along the path, by the trash cans and near the dunes, and visitors begin to read them, pick up litter and keep their distance. This gentle tale by Çınar BİBER can be read on Masalcı Baba.
