Seven-year-old Lily treasures her garden after nightfall, when the moon rises and the world becomes still. Dressed in her yellow boots and blue starry pajamas, she slips outside to tend the pale white and lavender flowers that open only in moonlight, their centers glowing like tiny lanterns. Each evening she waters them with her green watering can.
One clear night, a small butterfly with silver-blue wings and faint moon-shaped markings arrives, leaving a trail of shimmering dust. It visits only Lily's night flowers, sipping nectar and resting on dewy leaves, and hides whenever clouds cover the moon. Lily decides to protect this rare visitor by watering, weeding, and whispering to the blooms, tying stems to sticks in strong wind, and giving extra care to a flower that loses its petals. The butterfly returns night after night, and Lily begins to see how the flowers and the butterfly depend on each other.
