Maya is a young girl who adores rainforest mammals. She reads about them, draws them, and keeps notes in her little canvas satchel. One day she opens her book to a new animal: a little tapir with a dark brown coat, pale cream spots and stripes fading along its back, and a short flexible snout. Maya learns that tapirs live in the rainforest near rivers and thick green trees, where they need water to drink, leaves to eat, and shady places to hide and rest. She decides to build a model of this home on the big table.
With blue-green paper, brown clay, soft moss, and paper orchids, Maya shapes a river with a friendly face and trees with kind bark faces and wide canopies. She places the little tapir by the water and adds a monkey, a toucan, a frog, a butterfly, a sleepy sloth, and a bright parrot, making sure each animal has food, water, and shelter.
