Maya is a child who enjoys reading about rainforest creatures that are active after dark, such as bats, owls and kinkajous with large round eyes. She longs to encounter these animals herself rather than only in books. One evening she puts on her yellow rain jacket, picks up her flashlight and walks outside, where the dark forest offers soft sounds and damp, green scents.

Near her home a rustling sound draws her attention upward, and a small kinkajou with golden-brown fur and a long curly tail peers down at her. Maya calls it Kiki, and the curious animal guides her further among the trees. Together they encounter Olivia Owl, observe bats catching insects, see a mother opossum with her babies, watch fireflies above a pond and hear a snoring sloth. Kiki also introduces Maya to its own family and helps a baby kinkajou practice climbing, and Maya comes to understand that each animal has a role at night.
