Maya lives at the edge of a bright savanna, where the grass moves like a golden sea. One morning she meets Elly, a tiny elephant calf with floppy ears and a small glowing star on his forehead, who senses that something in the savanna is missing. The birds are silent and the wind seems to hold its breath. When the two friends reach the old watering hole, they find only cracked, dry mud, and a lizard tells them that nobody shares anymore, so the water went away.
Maya and Elly set out to find the missing water, and along the way they meet Zuri the giraffe, who refuses to share her leaves, and Bobo the baboon, who is too busy counting his pebbles to help. Maya answers each of them with patience and gentle words rather than argument, and slowly both animals agree to join the search. The group learns that digging out the old spring is hard work, and tempers fray until Elly's soft trumpet and Maya's calm reminder show them that kindness and teamwork are stronger than grumbling.
