In a woodland of tall oaks and maples, Finn the fox lives in a den beneath the roots and spends his days with his best friend Pip, a tiny sky-blue songbird with a thin red thread around one leg. They play hide-and-seek among the ferns and share berries, until the crisp autumn wind signals that Pip must fly south for the winter. Before leaving, she gives Finn a goodbye by scratching a tiny heart onto a bright red maple leaf.

That leaf gives Finn an idea: he will collect goodbyes from every departing friend on leaves of crimson, amber and gold, so that no one ever truly leaves. All autumn he gathers the leaves and arranges them in neat piles, showing them to the squirrels, rabbits and a wise old owl, yet he worries they might fade or be lost and keeps them hidden from wind and rain. When a fierce gust scatters his treasured collection, Finn learns from Bramble, a sturdy badger in a knitted scarf, that goodbyes may be kept differently.
