Eight-year-old Leo lives in a small village set among green hills, and he spends his days wandering the meadows and streams with a green cloth satchel on his shoulder. On a sunny morning near a berry bush he comes across a tiny bird whose feathers shine like a rainbow. He names the bird Pip, gives it a band of braided grass, and slowly notices that Pip's colours shift with the sky, turning pink and gold in sunshine, blue when wind approaches, with the tuft on its head rising before a breeze. Leo begins carrying a notebook, patiently writing down what he observes and treating the bird's colours as a language worth learning.
When Pip's feathers fade to soft grey and its tuft droops, Leo recalls that grey came before rain. He brings his notes to Gran, and together they visit Mayor Tomas, who doubts at first that a bird could forecast weather. Leo's careful record persuades him, and the villagers secure roofs, store firewood, shelter animals and fill buckets before the storm.
