Daniel spends many happy hours at Grandpa Joe's farm, and one bright morning he meets a shy little grey donkey with a cream muzzle, long floppy ears and a woven red-and-blue harness decorated with tiny brass bells. The two quickly become best friends, and Daniel brushes the donkey's soft coat, braids bright ribbons into the harness, and watches with delight as the animal proudly carries red, blue and yellow ribbons around the yard. It soon becomes clear that the donkey enjoys having a job to do.
When Grandpa Joe plans a big festival with music, games and crowds, Daniel is excited, but the donkey is not. Loud drumbeats and shouting children make it tremble and hide behind Daniel, who understands that his friend is frightened. Instead of forcing the donkey into the busy celebration, Daniel asks Grandpa Joe for help and creates a calmer corner of the farm under a big oak tree.
