Sam is a curious boy who loves to explore and tends to hurry so he can see everything at once. One evening, in his mustard-yellow hoodie and red rain boots, he heads into the forest behind his house with a small canvas satchel. As the trees grow tall and the light fades, he realizes he has strayed from the path and nothing looks familiar. Just as worry sets in, a soft golden glow appears between the ferns: a turtle with a mossy green shell, glowing amber cracks and a small brass lantern on its back. The Lantern Turtle helps lost animals find their way home in the dark, and Sam eagerly asks to help too.
The turtle's first lesson is patience. When Sam rushes ahead, he is told to wait and listen, and together they find a trembling cream-white rabbit with a blue ribbon around one ear. Sam learns to kneel, stay still and speak softly so the rabbit will trust the lantern's warm light. Following the turtle's slow pace, they lead the rabbit back to its family, and a fox cub with a woven grass collar joins them along the way.
