Oliver, a curious boy in a mustard-yellow raincoat and bright red boots, loves to wander. One misty morning, he follows a narrow trail into the woods and discovers a clearing where a golden fox appears, her fur shining like sunlight and a leaf-shaped mark glowing on her forehead. She is the guardian of the ancient forest and asks Oliver for help: a path that once connected all the animal homes has been lost and forgotten. Oliver agrees, and together they set out to find where it once ran.
The fox leads Oliver to Old Owl, the keeper of forest memory, who explains the path's route. Along the way, a little rabbit with one floppy ear joins them, then a chattering squirrel, and soon badgers, moles, hedgehogs and voles come to help. Oliver pulls brambles aside, wedges flat stones into the stream bed so even the tiniest mouse can cross, and learns from the fox which plants to leave and which to gently remove.
