Leo, a curious boy in a red knitted hat, a puffy blue coat and yellow mittens, discovers a glittering cave entrance on a snowy day. Inside, the walls shine like countless stars, ice crystals hang overhead, and beside a frozen pool he meets a small penguin made of clear, pale blue-white ice. He names it Sparkle. Though Sparkle is cold and glassy while Leo is warm and bundled up, a nudge of the penguin's faceted beak against his mitten turns uncertainty into friendship, and the two set off to explore together.
Sparkle leads Leo past a shimmering frozen waterfall, down an ice slide and through a hall of crystal pillars where they play hide-and-seek. When a dark tunnel frightens Leo, Sparkle lights the way, and inside they find frosty drawings on the wall. Later, teamwork is tested when a big ice block blocks the way back, and piece by piece they clear the path together.
